The Alhambra

After quite a while of returning so as to encounter direct the narratives behind the world's most prominent canvases, I chose to enjoy a reprieve in examining visual workmanship and broaden my points of view a piece. I remained up the entire night on which experience to take straightaway, and the throughout the night thought drove me to a choice to take another adventureâ€to take on Architectural works of art. First stop, the world-well known Alhambra in Granada, Spain. I returned 12 centuries in time, right to the ninth centuryâ€the rule of the Islamic intrusion of Spain. The Zirites, who are the main rulers of Granada, had the Alhambra built for military reasons. They fabricated their manors on the slope over the Alhambra, making the structure a post for inevitable assaults from foreseen winners. Strain was noticeable all around consistently during this point, yet it didn't prevent me from valuing the magnificence of the structure that is Alhambra. In spite of the fact that st ill not completely created, its undeniable Arabesque styleâ€a sort of Islamic craftsmanship with dreary mind boggling, geometric examples of interweaving plant, creature, and dynamic formsâ€makes it a sight to behold.I have just perused in workmanship and history books that the Alhambra as a stronghold would go on until the thirteenth century, so I chose to avoid the exhausting part and take myself to 1238. It was now when the Alhambra was utilized as a home of the lords. During this time, it was the Nasrites who administered the Islamic realm in Spain. The Alhambra was later on evolved to incorporate a â€Å"alcazaba† (stronghold), a â€Å"alcazar† (royal residence) and a little â€Å"medina† (city), still with Islamic workmanship managing the sum of the structures. The old post was later on reestablished; the fine arts created to arrive at the maximum capacity of its magnificence. This, thusly, implied the Golden Age of Islam in Spain. Maybe it was the mi nd-boggling amazement over the incredible engineering of the Alhambra and the chills it gave me just by seeing a few pieces of its basic plan which shipped me to one more century. Before I know it, it was 1492, and Granada was not, at this point involved by the Islams.Catholicism was taken back to Spain, and the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabel vanquished the city, making the Alhambra a Christian court. Military battalions and temples were worked inside the compound, fusing Catholicism into the Islamic engineering. For a considerable length of time the Alhambra transformed into a Catholic city based on Islamic roots, however as years passed, the incredible building wonder was left ignored. I was then shipped to the nineteenth century, and it stunned me to discover the Alhambra abandoned, aside from by criminals, bums, and destitute people. It struck me so hard that in a matter of moments I returned to introduce time. Presently, as I am composing this, the Alhambra is as of now an UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a solid contender for the New Seven Wonders of the World. The Alhambra being perceived as one of the most significant structures and building fine arts in the whole world makes me so glad that I was a piece of history when everything occurred; however I was only an onlooker, I got the chance to encounter the rich culture where the Alhambra was established, and the vivid history it had withstood.References Crayon, G. Thank you notes are a small gesture that can show a lot of gratitude, and they take so little time to write up! Use these tips if you’re unsure of the best times to send a thank you note â€" I promise you’ll be as happy as the person you’re thanking when you’re done. EasyBib can help with writing projects, large or small, personal or educational. From an AI-enhanced essay checker to fun guides featuring examples of interjections and the correct usage of coordinating conjunctions and indefinite pronouns, it can help polish any writing you do â€" from a thank you note to a dissertation. 1.        After an interview If you had a big interview for a job or a summer internship and you’re looking to follow up, a thank you note is the perfect way to do it. Writing a handwritten thank you note will definitely distinguish you from the crowd, and it shows extra effort that tells your interviewer that you are serious about the position. Try to include little things that you all discussed during your time together if you can. If you do not know the physical address of your interviewer, a quick email thank you note is fine, too. 2.        After receiving a gift Birthdays, holidays, and graduation are all prime thank you note writing time â€" even if you haven’t ever written a family member or a friend a thank you card before, now is the time to start showing your loved ones thanks for their gifts. After all, they took time to pick out a gift for you, so you can take a little time to thank them for it on paper! It can be great to include photos with the gift, too. For example, if you receive a new jacket from your grandmother, sending her a note with a photo of you wearing the jacket would surely brighten her day, and as a result, yours. 3.        After someone helps you with something difficult Sometimes we get stuck in sticky situations and need some help. Maybe someone pitched in and helped you with that big event you were planning, or maybe a professor listened to your worries about your grades and offered a lot of comfort to you. After you resolve your situation and things calm down a little, it can be nice to send a thank you note to those who were there for you in that time of need. You can even add in a note about how things are after receiving them and how they helped you reach success. 4.        After someone gives you their time Even if you aren’t in a difficult situation, you might find yourself in a circumstance where you would like advice or mentorship from someone older. This could be someone you know through a friend, a professor or a past work experience. Writing a thank you note to thank them for their time after speaking with them will show your gratitude for their input or advice, and it will help you to strengthen that relationship for the future. 5.        After a wonderful class or experience Every now and then, a professor will be exceptional, or a friend will throw an amazing event. This is a perfect time to send a thank you note! Any experience that left a positive impression on you is reason enough to pick up a pen and start writing, and the person receiving the note will be so happy that you acknowledged their efforts. 6.        Just for fun! There are specific times where it is appropriate, and even expected, that you send a thank you note, including the times listed above. But, if you know someone that you just really appreciate for their personality, character or actions, then be sure to show your gratitude for their presence in your life. Everyone appreciates a kind note, and being more thankful in your daily life will help you spread kindness and grow friendships with the kind of people that you seek to be like. Now that you can picture sometimes in your life when you can send a proper thank you, don’t hold back! Studies show that people appreciate the thank you much more than you think, even if you’re scared about the reaction being awkward. Sending thank you notes can be a very mature way to show gratitude and appreciation, and it’s a great time to start forming that habit of saying “thank you” as often as possible, especially to those who really deserve it. Did you know that you can cite a thank you note? Just treat it like a personal letter! A Personal Story - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 4 Words: 1107 Downloads: 5 Date added: 2019/03/13 Category Literature Essay Level High school Tags: Autobiography Essay Did you like this example? A persons story or who they are is based on experiences theyve faced throughout their lives. People are largely influenced by an abundant amount of external factors that help determine in which ways an individual is socialized. This socialization arises from the moment we are born, allowing us to become continuously shaped by external factors. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "A Personal Story" essay for you Create order We are mainly shaped by family, friends, and most importantly, society as a whole. After paying close attention to who I am over the past few years, I now know that my life has been shaped by my family, society, and the experiences that Ive been through. These three factors have shaped the way I view others, as well in which ways theyve influenced me. From July 1, 2001, the day I was born, I was given an ascribed status of a Muslim American, which I knew would be a very important role to play in my life as I got older. I come from a big family, with my mother, father, four sisters, and brother. I was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, but both of my parents are from Afghanistan, a country with a strong cultural heritage. Because of this, they have seen and still see things differently than I do. Based on my gender, my mother and father have made their own decisions on which ways they were going to raise me, including the ways I dress, the way I act, and what is to be expected of not only me, but my sisters as well. Primarily, my parents knew how to raise me from experiences theyve had in Afghanistan and America, causing them to treat me a certain way based on societys standards. My family has had a great impact on my life, as theyve taught me many things. My mother and father, along with my older brother and sister have all had an impact of my outlook in life. Since all of them were born in Afghanistan, theyve taught me that the meaning connected to the word   family is different there than it is here in America. This led me to believing in strong family ties and togetherness, no matter how tough times get. A Familys reputation is an essential part of the Afghan culture, where the actions of one family member affect an entire familys reputation. For this reason, most families in Afghanistan are very cautious of their childrens upbringing since society will judge them based on the presentation of their kids, especially their daughters. They also helped me understand why values and beliefs are so important in life. Since I was little, Ive been given an understanding of the cultural aspect of family values and norms. This allows me to understand that the person Ive become is based on the values I acquired from watching my parents behav iors and their social interactions with others. They introduced me to the social aspects of kindness, respect and good behavior when connecting with diverse people in the social structure. By teaching me everything theyve acquired throughout their lives so far, they definitely influenced my life significantly. As I previously said, being a muslim from Afghanistan plays a very important role in my life. This has had another significant impact on my life. Because this makes me different from some others, Ive been judged many times during my life by people in ways that I feel nobody should have to go through. Due to the terrible disaster that took place on September 11, I faced the awful side of religious discrimination. Although I was only two months old when this tragedy occured, it caused stereotyping views against Muslims, and led us to being seen as enemies of America, even until today. Over the years, Ive come across many incidents such as getting weird stares for wearing a headscarf, being called a terrorist, and hearing that I dont belong in America and need to go back to where I came from. Not only did this make me feel left out, but it also made me feel different compared to those around me in a negative way. Based on my personal experiences, I have come to an understanding that people in a society are deviant, meaning they make social judgements, such as deciding what someone is like based on what they look like from the outside, not even knowing what theyre truly like. From the elementary through high school, Ive attended a private school for muslims. Although there were students from a different country and/or race, I was never given the proper opportunity to meet or speak with anyone from a different religion. Going from a private school to a more public environment has been a very big transformation for me. I was afraid of going somewhere different than th e school I attended because I had the idea that some people would not be comfortable around me because of where Im from. Now that I attend a very diverse community college, Im able to meet others whose religion is different from mine. Despite this difference, I learned that not everyone in a society is so quick to judge, and that they are in fact understanding of who I am and are able to accept it. As a result, this has made me more confident in who I am. Throughout my first semester of college, I have made strong social ties with new friends, causing my social network to increase. Because social interactions are essential for adaptability to a different culture and social structure, Its important for me to maintain these relationships as they allow me to connect with people from various ethnic backgrounds and be included in a diverse population. As I spend my time in community college figuring out what I want to do in the future, I will continue to grow and learn more about myself. Being a Muslim from Afghanistan and living in America for my whole life has supplied me with a variety of mental and physical sociological changes. I have embraced a different social structure by living in America, but am still aware of my original social structure by being from Afghanistan. Ive learned to incorporate what I know about both of these countries and use that knowledge throughout my everyday life. Although being a muslim has put me through some ups and downs, I am and will always be proud of the person that I am, the person that my parents raised me to be. Living as a Muslim female has enabled me to learn how the history of my race has affected my life, and how its turned me into the independent woman that I am.

The Effects Of Today s Media On The Homeless Community Essay

The Effect of Today’s Media On the Homeless Community Brad Jones Cisco College Introduction In today’s society, you see an outstanding amount of homelessness in the streets with no sign of stopping anytime in the near future. These numbers continue to climb with the majority of people blaming it on the homeless individual either being too lazy to get a college (sometimes even high school) degree, too lazy to go and at least try to get a job or a combination of both. With this thought process in mind, you could say people are oblivious to the deinstitutionalization of thousands of mentally ill patients put out into the streets due to America’s corrupted economic system. But the truth is, people are usually just more drawn to either make fun of them or just walk right by them without batting an eye purely based off the different types of media that are being put out for anybody to see at anytime. The media has played a key role in the public’s perception of homeless people, as well as the increase in the number of homeless people present. Though there ar e some organizations in the US trying to help combat the rising homeless numbers, the current stereotype of homeless individuals has led the majority of the country to make comedic meme’s, videos and other variations of media to bring down the homeless community and not raise awareness, but bring up their own perception of the homeless to the rest of the country. Qualities of a Successful College Student Free Essays

What qualities in a student cause him/her to be successful in college? ESSAY 3 It can be fun for a person that is starting college. Starting college can be fun because the person is in a new environment. The environment is different for one who is starting because the person has to take on a more mature responsibility than he or she would have had taken on while in high school. We will write a custom essay sample on Qualities of a Successful College Student or any similar topic only for you Order Now Although starting college is fun, there are 3 roles a student can take on in order to be successful while in college. After getting through the 2012 school year, I have come to the conclusion that in order for a student to be successful while in college, he or she has to do the following: take a College Career Success Skills class his or her freshman year, he or she has to feel the professor out, and the student has to also take down notes. Taking a College Career Success Skills course is the best class that a 1st time freshmen can take while in college. It is the best class because the student finishes the course, knowing that he or she is going to be successful while majoring in the career of his or her choice. The course allows the student to explore a major and write a paper about it. This is because many students enter college not knowing what he or she wants to major in. The student also learns if he or she is capable of being successful in the field through taking a personality test. This test determines if the student’s personality match the field. If the student pass the test, than he or she has found a field and has also finished, knowing that he or she is going to be successful while studying in that field. For example: If bob was a 1st time freshman and he did not know what major he would be successful in studying, taken this course would have given him the answer because he would have had found the career that he knows he is good in. So, CCSS is the best course for a student who is trying to find a major to be a pro at while in college. When the student feels the professor out, this is another way of being successful while in college. This is because in order to past a course, the student has to think the way the professor would think. The student has to work a math problem out or write a sentence out the same way his or her professor would because that is what one who goes to school would called â€Å"thinking like the professor. † When a student receives a graded paper, the student is suppose too get up and ask him or her â€Å"What did I do wrong? What did this comment mean? † This way, the student has all the information he or she needs to pass the course. If the student was told to work on subject-verb agreement, this would be the main thing that the student would look out for while writing because this was his or her weakest point. This way, the student then thinks just like the professor by writing out sentences like him or her. Good note-taking skills are another great way to be successful while in college. It is another great way because every piece of note counts. Every piece of note counts because everything that was written down over the week will be on the test. A student that takes down notes all week will mostly likely say â€Å"oh, I remember this†, when it is time to test because basically it was the test the student was writing out the whole time. If a student has written down all of chapter 6, he or she is suppose too be familiar with the test after taken down notes all week. Therefore, writing notes is another quality of a student being successful while he or she is in college. What qualities in a student cause him or her to be successful while in college? Many colleges are wondering the qualities. It takes one from experience to answer such a question. After surviving the spring 2012 semester, my following qualities were: taking a CCSS course to figure out what would I be successful at studying in, feeling out the professors so we both can cooperate like teacher-student, and writing down everything the teacher wrote on the board. Those are the qualities I would recommend to any student that is asking â€Å"what qualities in a student cause him or her to be successful in college? † How to cite Qualities of a Successful College Student, Papers

Thalia Grace Daughter of Zeus Essay Example

Thalia Grace: Daughter of Zeus Essay Thalia Grace, or just Thalia, since she doesn’t like using her last name, is one of the children of the Big Three. Who are the Big Three, you ask? Well, they are the top most powerful gods in Olympus: Zeus, lord of the sky, Poseidon, lord of the sea, and Hades, lord of the Underworld. You must be thinking, ‘Thalia Grace? I never heard of her. Is she a minor goddess? ’ This is because Thalia is a fictional character from Rick Riordan’s national bestseller series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians. She is purely make-believe, a character from the mind and imagination of the author himself. She isn’t the main character of the book, but she plays an important role. But, nobody really knows a lot about her. Who is Thalia Grace? Let’s first start off by saying that Thalia is a demigod, half-god and half human. She has spiky black hair and electric blue eyes, and some freckles can be seen under her eyes. She wears punk-styled clothing, and has a metal bracelet on her wrist that turns into a copy of Aegis, the shield that her dad uses with the Gorgon’s head imprinted on it. We will write a custom essay sample on Thalia Grace: Daughter of Zeus specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We will write a custom essay sample on Thalia Grace: Daughter of Zeus specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on Thalia Grace: Daughter of Zeus specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer She is tall, and, according to Percy Jackson, is â€Å"built like a long-distance runner. † Thalia is described as â€Å"extremely pretty† and â€Å"beautiful† by everyone she meets, mostly gods and other demigods. She has ADHD (keeps her alive in battles) and dyslexia (her head is hard-wired to read ancient Greek), the two things that classifies you as a demigod or not. Thalia Grace was a candidate for the child mentioned in the Great Prophecy. According to the Oracle, when a child of the Big Three turns 16, he/she will make a decision that can save or destroy the world. The three gods swore an oath to not bear anymore children but Zeus and Poseidon broke this oath, making Hades furious. He sent a hoard of monsters after Thalia and her friends, intercepting them into crossing the border to Camp Half-Blood. Thalia sacrificed herself in order for her friends to pass safely, staying back to fend off the attackers. It was said that Thalia was mortally wounded, so, in a desperate attempt to save her life, Zeus turned her into a pine tree. She was well and alive inside, but she aged slowly. When the Golden Fleece â€Å"worked its magic too well,† she was brought to life and ooked 15, instead of being 19 years old. After being brought back to life, she was now a candidate to be the hero that will change the world, for better or worse. Their enemies tried to persuade her to change sides, and there was a time when she was almost tempted to do so. If it wasn’t for her friends, she might have done something she would regret later. To prevent this from happening, she took the oath for being a hunter for Artemis, turning her back on love and being immortal forever. Thalia is said to have the same personality as Percy Jackson in terms of stubbornness and determination. This is the reason why they so often clash, seeing in two different perspectives but are too proud to admit defeat. She is an outstanding sword fighter and a natural leader. At first glance, she shows herself as cold and sarcastic, hating introducing herself to others and doesn’t trust strangers easily. But, the more you know her, the more she opens herself up to you, revealing her true colors and treating you as a friend. Once you prove yourself worthy of her respect, that respect will never go away unless you do something to betray her trust. Thalia Grace has a great sense of responsibility and she’d never abandon a friend in need. Still, although she puts up a strong front, Thalia is weak against power, like her father. That is her hubris, her fatal flaw. She is hot-tempered and though she has a cool composure most of the times, there had been a few occasions when she let her emotion get the better of her. Ironically, Thalia has a fear of heights, even when her father is the lord of Sky. She keeps this fact a secret, only telling Percy Jackson after she warned him to keep quiet about it. Thalia Grace doesn’t have a good relationship with her family. She left home when she was ten years old, leaving her alcoholic mother behind. She didn’t know about her father until she was claimed, so they don’t really get along well, either. It was mentioned from Rick Riordan’s new book: The Lost Hero that Thalia has a brother named Jason Grace, who was taken away from her when he was only two. She mentioned this as â€Å"the real reason why I left. † She is not close with Zeus, at all. In fact, she hates him. She said that he’s the reason why her life is miserable and that he didn’t act like a father at all. It was later explained in the series that gods can’t interfere with their children’s lives, so they have no choice but to help and watch behind the scenes. But, as much as she seemed to resent him, Thalia still can’t help but to beam with pride when she met her father for the first time and she was given a compliment and congratulation. She also uses a shield and an electrical spear (a mace canister when not in use) in battles that are said to be gifts from her father. Thalia ran away from home at a young age, so she stopped going to school after 5th grade or during 6th. But, this doesn’t mean that she’s stupid. She’s just not traditionally educated. Thalia is very quick in fights and is witty in conversations. She never seems to run out of any sarcastic comments. It’s just her â€Å"defense mechanism. † Thalia is not as smart as Annabeth Chase, a daughter of Athena, but she knows her way into battles and strategies. Although Thalia doesn’t regret anything that has happened to her, she admitted into wanting to go back, to turn back time. She wanted to go back to the time when it was only her, Luke and Annabeth. It hurt her to see Luke became someone’s pawn and for Annabeth to be so conflicted. She had always wondered what the outcome would had been if they didn’t stay in that Cyclops’s domain and lost time. Then, she wouldn’t have sacrificed herself and left Luke all alone. She only mentioned this once, but she felt really guilty. Sadness and remorse filled her heart as she takes on what had happened to her friend and that she’s too late to change anything. Luke had already sacrificed himself to be Kronos’ vessel, therefore losing his self control. In the end, Luke did the right thing, but lost his life in return. Thalia matured in the series. After taking her role as a lieutenant of the Hunters, she became more responsible. She’s still as sarcastic as ever, but her way of thinking has changed from the beginning of the book. She has become more calm and fair, seldom acting on impulse anymore. In the end, she’s content with her life. She still felt sad at her loss sometimes, but life must go on. She has a job to do and lives to protect. Throughout the series, Thalia has learned to wipe the mud off her face and to get right back from falling down. The readers will learn what true courage and friendship is from reading about Thalia Grace. They will learn that sitting down and sulking will not get you anywhere. If you want something, you’re going to have to fight for it.

Unfortunately, we students dont have a choice about participation this season. But fear not!  If youre  properly prepared, both by studying and  by taking care of yourself, you will be able to tackle the week with relatively little stress. Its a commonly held belief that during the week of finals students hole up in the library, pulling all-nighters and studying for hours on end, subsisting on Cheetos and Snack Packs. Well, actually, it turns out that if you want to test like the champion you are, you really might want to start doing almost the opposite of that. We at have done a little surveying of high school/college students and had a look at what some experts had to say, and weve compiled a list of some strategies to make finals week a little more bearable. Verify the Details This tip is important even before you start studying. Make sure you ask your teacher(s) at least a couple weeks in advance about what sort of test you should be preparing for; the knowledge you focus on for a multiple choice exam is different than what you should be prepared to answer in essay/short-answer format. In the former, prepare more factually-based study notes, (flashcards are great), to ensure that you have quick recall for the types of questions youre likely to see. In the case of essay questions, make an effort to understand foundational concepts and be able to explain them. Also important (but  overlooked with surprising regularity) is verifying the time and location  of your test. Though maybe not as expected  in high school, college exams often take place in a different room and/or at a different time than your normally scheduled class. This seemingly randomized scheduling is also common in AP testing, so double-check with your teachers to avoid a stressful snafu. Experiment with Study Strategies A lot of people, students and professionals alike, often stick with the so-called tried and true approach to work and studying- that is,  the idea that if you spend enough time trying to pound the material into your head, eventually it will stick. This is a common misconception. Unfortunately (or actually maybe fortunately, as that method is nothing short of exhausting), trying to jam-pack information into your head is not the most effective way to get  your brain to retain information. According to research, the human brain is not designed to focus narrowly on a single concept for long stretches of time; really any more than an hour is pushing it. It is recommended for individuals to designate an hour to spend on a specific subject, and follow this intensive period with a break from the material at hand. Using this on-and-off method, your ability to retain  information will not only increase, but the repetition of class materials will help the studies set in your mind. Note: these breaks are most effective when they involve getting up and moving around, at least a little bit. Get Some Exercise Many students see finals week as an opportunity to forego regular exercise on the grounds that they simply dont have time. In reality, that point is only halfway valid (sorry to say). Maybe you dont have the time to devote to a regular gym session or soccer practice (or whatever it is you do to get the blood flowing), but there are a whole bunch of ways that you can incorporate some movement on the fly. For starters, theres always the option of going on a brisk little walk. After all, its springtime now, and who doesnt like basking in some sunshine? If the weather is still crummy and/or you have allergies and/or you dont like the light of day, there are lots of online pages devoted to office exercises or workouts that one can do at a desk. They arent intensive, but when you find yourself in a slump, a quick fix can often be as simple as getting a little more blood flow up to the cranium.  The Washington Post  put together  twelve office workouts (with positively hilarious animations) to guide you through the motions. Eat Well As  with the aforementioned lack of exercise, testing season often has a way of encouraging students to break out the snack food and pizza. Dont get me wrong, snack foods and pizza are great, but only in that ol moderation we all hear too much about. It seems  that these foods, particularly the processed ones, are full of cheap carbs that the body digests quickly, resulting in a short-lived burst of energy followed by the desperate need for a nap. The last thing you need when youre trying to learn something is to have your body imagining a nice, cozy bed or even the floor of the library- people sleep there, too. Eating healthy food is always a good idea, but it really is particularly beneficial when it comes time to use your brain. Instead of packaged snacks, plan ahead and bring fresh vegetables, fruits, some nuts, and really anything else with nutrients that take longer for the body to break down. Typically, the more nutritionally dense foods take longer to go through your system, meaning youre less likely to be distracted by hunger five minutes after eating. *Also crucial: eat a hearty and healthy meal before you walk into the exam for the same reason; no matter how well you know the material, you wont be able to focus when your stomach isnt in the game. Get Some Sleep Go to bed on time! That is yet another piece of advice all students have heard a million times and brushed off with a laugh: Who has time for that? As a student myself, I know how easy it is to say that youll catch up on sleep later or three hours will be fine, when you have a big project due- but the truth is, youre hurting your performance as much as youre hurting yourself. The pre-exam all-nighter is almost  a rite of passage, but how about we make this generation the one to put that tradition to rest? Short of sleeping through your exam, not getting enough sleep before the big test is one of the worst things you can do. A lack of sleep can wreak havoc on your brains ability to not only store new information, but even recall information you thought youd already been familiar with. That is to say, even if you did all the right things, spaced out your studies, and learned all you needed to know, when exam day comes along and you havent had enough sleep, you just might forget everything. Silence the Social Media This piece of advice is another one that seems like a no-brainer, but really is a lot more difficult than it sounds. Social media is everywhere, if you hadnt noticed, and unplugging it is nearly impossible. My father even said that he wasnt sure how good of a student he would be in this day and age when even our methods of study (AKA the World Wide Web) can serve as an outstanding source of distraction (puppy videos as far as the eye can see). But the difficulty involved in ignoring these distractions doesnt detract from how important it is to distance yourself from them. Studies show us that the brain is incapable of dividing its attention between too many things at once; the maximum number of subjects we can supposedly concentrate on is around seven, but even then, youre unlikely to retain any of the stimulus youre getting. For that reason, if on one tab you have a study guide and on another you have puppy videos (and dont forget some incoming texts, Instagram notifications, tweets, etc.), chances are, your studying will suffer for it. Now, who wants to spend hours studying to get half the benefit? If that doesnt sound good to you, put the phone down. Friends Sometimes (sometimes), studying with friends can be a wonderful thing. Having pre-arranged study plans can keep you from procrastinating or taking too long of breaks, and you could feel encouraged by your friends study habits and want to follow their example. However, some people are better  equipped to work in groups than others. If youre one of those people who is motivated by the presence of comrades, then by all means, schedule a study session! But, if youre someone who cant help but chat with your friends, even with textbooks splayed out before you, you might be better off holing up on your own. The Occasional Treat This last piece of advice  is semi-contradictory to most of what is outlined  above. For the vast majority of your study-week, the prescribed advice will serve best to see you through the stress, but that being said, sometimes you really do just need to give yourself a break. Maybe you need longer than a ten-minute rest. Maybe you need some downtime to chat with friends. Or maybe a long, intensive gym session will do you some good. Every so often, treating yourself is not only to be expected, but its also a very good thing. Focusing on business is certainly important, but without reprieve from the demands of studying and grades, you just might start to feel a little hopeless. So, if after a long period of studying and nibbling on carrots you feel that you need to take yourself out for a coffee and a banana nut muffin- go ahead! Treat yoself.

Mt St Helens 1980 Eruption

Mt St Helens 1980 Eruption At 8:32 a.m. on May 18, 1980, the volcano located in southern Washington called Mt. St. Helens erupted. Despite the many warning signs, many were taken by surprise by the blast. The Mt. St. Helens eruption was the worst volcanic disaster in U.S. history, causing the deaths of 57 people and approximately 7,000 large animals. Â   A Long History of Eruptions Mt. St. Helens is a composite volcano within the Cascade Range in what is now southern Washington, approximately 50 miles northwest of Portland, Oregon. Though Mt. St. Helens is approximately 40,000-years old, it is considered a relatively young, active volcano. Mt. St. Helens historically has had four extended periods of volcanic activity (each lasting hundreds of years), interspersed with dormant periods (often lasting thousands of years). The volcano is currently in one of its active periods. Native Americans living in the area have long known that this was not an ordinary mountain, but one that had fiery potential. Even the name, Louwala-Clough, a Native American name for the volcano, means smoking mountain. Mt. St. Helens Discovered by Europeans The volcano was first discovered by Europeans when British Commander George Vancouver of the H.M.S.Discovery spotted Mt. St. Helens from the deck of his ship while he was exploring the northern Pacific Coast from 1792 to 1794. Commander Vancouver named the mountain after his fellow countryman, Alleyne Fitzherbert, the Baron St. Helens, who was serving as the British ambassador to Spain. Piecing together eyewitness descriptions and geologic evidence, it is believed that Mt. St. Helens erupted somewhere between 1600 and 1700, again in 1800, and then quite frequently during the 26-year span of 1831 to 1857. After 1857, the volcano grew quiet. Most people who viewed the 9,677-foot tall mountain during the 20th century, saw a picturesque backdrop rather than a potentially deadly volcano. Thus, not fearing an eruption, many people built houses around the base of the volcano. Warning Signs On March 20, 1980, a 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck underneath Mt. St. Helens. This was the first warning sign that the volcano had reawakened. Scientists flocked to the area. On March 27, a small explosion blew a 250-foot hole in the mountain and released a plume of ash. This caused fears of injuries from rockslides so the entire area was evacuated. Similar eruptions to the one on March 27 continued for the next month. Though some pressure was being released, large amounts were still building. In April, a large bulge was noticed on the north face of the volcano. The bulge grew quickly, pushing outward about five feet a day. Though the bulge had reached a mile in length by the end of April, the plentiful plumes of smoke and seismic activity had begun to dissipate. As April drew to a close, officials were finding it increasingly difficult to maintain the evacuation orders and road closures due to pressures from homeowners and the media as well as from stretched budget issues. Mt. St. Helens Erupts At 8:32 a.m. on May 18, 1980, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck under Mt. St. Helens. Within ten seconds, the bulge and surrounding area fell away in a gigantic, rock avalanche. The avalanche created a gap in the mountain, allowing the release of pent-up pressure that erupted laterally in a huge blast of pumice and ash. The noise from the blast was heard as far away as Montana and California; however, those close to Mt. St. Helens reported hearing nothing. The avalanche, huge to begin with, quickly grew in size as it crashed down the mountain, traveling around 70 to 150 miles per hour and destroying everything in its path. The blast of pumice and ash traveled northward at 300 miles per hour and was a raging hot 660Â ° F (350Â ° C). The blast killed everything in a 200-square mile area. Within ten minutes, the plume of ash had reached 10 miles high. The eruption lasted nine hours. Death and Damage For the scientists and others who were caught in the area, there was no way to outrun either the avalanche or the blast. Fifty-seven people were killed. It is estimated that about 7,000 large animals such as deer, elk, and bears were killed and thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of small animals died from the volcanic eruption. Mt. St. Helens had been surrounded by a lush forest of coniferous trees and numerous clear lakes before the blast. The eruption felled entire forests, leaving only burned tree trunks all flattened in the same direction. The amount of timber destroyed was enough to build about 300,000 two-bedroom homes. A river of mud traveled down the mountain, caused by melted snow and released groundwater, destroying approximately 200 houses, clogging up shipping channels in the Columbia River, and contaminating the beautiful lakes and creeks in the area. Mt. St. Helens is now only 8,363-feet tall, 1,314-feet shorter than it was before the explosion. Though this explosion was devastating, it will certainly not be the last eruption from this very active volcano.

Historical - Essay Example The evidence of this is in the effect of the cultural integration into the original arts of these communities. Before the arrival of Babylonians and Assyrians, Sumerian art was mainly based on clay writings. Their original art, cuneiform writing, involved writing on clay, metal, or wood using a stylus shaped like a wedge. Sumerians used cuneiform to write or draw their most important cultural and religious figures mainly the gods and goddesses. The cuneiforms mainly represented objects and was not used for scholarly purposes in the original form. Diagram 1 below shows an example of a female head carved in limestone and wood. However, when the Babylonians arrived, they introduced their culture to the Sumerians. The effect of this was the Babylonian cultural influence on original Sumerian art. Sumerian art started featuring war themes, which was not common before the arrival of the Babylonians. The Babylonian culture influenced the original art of the Sumerians by introducing concepts of war. As illustrated in diagram 2 below, Inanna-Ishtar represents this cultural influence on original Sumerian art. The art sculpture combines the original elements of Sumerian art (goddess of fertility) and the Babylonian war culture (semitic goddess of

Comparing Fitzgeralds Great Gatsby and Eliots The Love Song of J. Alf

Fitzgerald's Great Gatsby and Eliot's The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock   Ã‚   The Roaring Twenties bring to mind a generation of endless partying, which reflected very little of the morals of the generations preceding it. The world, for that generation, was fast-paced and thoroughly material, crowded with bizarre and colorful characters like David Belasco and Arnold Rothstein. Inspired by this era's "spiritually exhausted people" (Brians), F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby and T. S. Eliot's The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock address many of the same themes in attempting to restore the "lost generation." In developing these themes, both authors utilize weather, the concept of illusion versus reality and the direction of time as a mode of conveying the promise of their dream to the citizens of the Jazz Age. In both The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock and The Great Gatsby, weather and time of day play an important part in setting the tone and mood. Prufrock sets out in the evening, a time of uncertainty, neither day nor night, to confront his past. Likewise, the important events in the Great Gatsby occur at a significant time of day. Once, when Gatsby talked to Nick about his past, Nick describes it as "a time of confusion," (Fitzgerald 102) which the evening time has come to symbolize. Also, the time of final confession in the Great Gatsby was the night Daisy rejected Gatsby (148). Even the covering of the night was not enough to hide the disenchantment of his dream. At this time, Gatsby tells the whole truth about his past and his relationship with Daisy. This past was set in October, as was The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. When Gatsby looks back through the mists of time, he sees a perfect ... ...both authors sought to communicate to their societies, the beauty of a dream uncorrupted by senseless illusions. In using the weather, the concept of illusion versus reality and the direction of time to convey the promise of their dream to the citizens of the Jazz Age, Fitzgerald and Eliot contrast the frustration and despair that was inherent in a spiritually bankrupt world with the fulfillment characteristic of a more grounded and less immoral lifestyle.    Works Cited:    Bewley, Marius. Light and water Essay

When light and water are absorbed by the plant, four light photons are assigned to Photosystem II while the energy is channeled to P680. This energy triggers the P680 molecule to release four electrons toward an electron acceptor in the thylakoid membrane. To fill up the â€Å"hole† in the P680 molecule, it will strongly attract two water molecules and break it up. Two atoms of Oxygen are released and form the gas that humans need while 4 atoms of hydrogen are taken for photosynthesis. The four hydrogen atoms become energized and are passed on to the next P680. This process will then continue to happen to a series of other protein carriers creating what is called an electron transport chain. This transferring of electrons makes the energy of these electrons fall to a lower level resulting to the release of energy. The energy can be classified as metabolic (ATP) or reducing (NADPH). These and carbon dioxide are used in the carbon fixation process or â€Å"Calvin Cycle. † Because the next steps do not need light, it is called the light-independent reactions. The Calvin Cycle is called such because its end-products (molecules of RuBP) are needed to keep the process going. Firstly, carbon dioxide and five carbon molecules called ribulose 1. 5 biphosphate (RuBP) join together so that the organism can use CO2 to synthesize glucose and other complex carbohydrates. This is carbon fixation and it cycles three times to form six three-carbon molecules (3PG) which are chemically restructured to become glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate(G3P) molecules. One of these G3P is needed to make carbohydrates while the rest are used to resynthesize three molecules of RuBP in the next cycle.

Personal Reflection Paper The Domino s Case - 796 Words

Shunhua Huang Denis Trapido BBUS 300 2/25/2016 Personal Reflection Paper As we discuss the Domino’s case, we discuss lots of management situations in Domino, and those situations are related to communication. In a company, poor execution, short leadership, and conflicts on the jobs always happen, and all the relevant bad managements are about lacking communication. The first job I got in the United States was working in McDonald. Since I had no any working experiences and had poor English basis, I didn’t realize many problems inside the store. When I look back my working experience in McDonald, the biggest problem is about communication. Sometimes, the store manager had a meeting with other managers to discuss things. However, as a low level employee, we never knew what they were discussing about, and we didn’t know what the direction of the store in the future is. Also, there was an example in my store. One day, the store manager found that employees are not happy when he talked about the work with the staff, he seemed to have something hesitantly, Although the store manager felt a little strange, but at that time, he did not dwell on what ‘s wrong and said goodbye to that staff. Later, however, the manager received the resignation letter from that staff because the staff had a conflict with one of the managers on working. The staff can t stand the manager s temper, so he chose to leave. And the staff had very good behavior and full of experiences.
